Window Glossary of Terms
Frame
The supporting frame for the glass within a window.
Head
The main horizontal part forming the top of the window frame.
Sash
The Movable part of the window made up of the vertical and horizontal frame that holds the glass.
Mullion
A mullion is a vertical element that forms a division between units of a window, door, or screen, or is used decoratively.
Fixed Light
Fixed windows are windows that don't move, for letting in light and expansive views.
Transom
A transom is a horizontal element that forms a division between units of a window, door, or screen, or is used decoratively.
Jamb
The main vertical parts forming the sides of a window frame.
Sill
The main horizontal part forming the bottom of the frame of a window.
Reveal
A timber frame (seperate to the window frame) that surrounds a window or door that usually assists in the fitting of the window or door.
