The Southern Star Group is proud to be a long-term supporter of The Salvation Army in a variety of ways including the Red Shield Appeal, the Just Brass program, the Annual Anzac Eve Concert and more. The Red Shield Appeal is the Army’s major community fund raiser each year and is held in May. This year, like every other year, they need everyone’s support.
This year we have been represented at both the Melbourne and the Geelong launches of the Red Shield Appeal. In Melbourne 590 people attended the Sofitel On Collins and $360,000 was raised during the event. The Geelong launch was held at GMHBA Stadium, on Thursday 17th May and was also a hugely successful event.
This year’s focus is on homelessness, as it has been for the past few years, but that is not the Red Shield Appeal’s only focus. The Appeal helps the Salvos to provide all of the various community support activities and social programs for which it has become renowned.
There are more than 105,000 people in Australia who currently don’t have a secure and safe place to live.
The pathways to homelessness are varied and complex. Events like loss of employment, family break down and sudden illness can potentially push a family or individual to breaking point, which often results in homelessness.
By assisting people before they reach crisis and find themselves with nowhere to go, The Salvation Army are helping to end homelessness.
Without the broad range of services The Salvation Army provides with donations to the Red Shield Appeal, many more people would face homelessness.
In addition to providing around 2,000 people with accommodation every week The Salvation Army is also working with thousands of people who are at extreme risk of becoming homeless.
As in previous years, the Salvation Army has been the beneficiary of the Southern Star Group’s assistance. We aim to aid The Salvation Army in their mission to provide support and assistance to those in need.
