Salvation Army Anzac Tribute Concert 2019
Southern Star are proud to be once again sponsoring the Salvation Army’s Anzac Tribute concert. This will be held on Tuesday 23rd April at 7pm at The Salvation Army Geelong, 239-241 Malop St. This year we are welcoming Roger Trigg as the guest conductor.
This will be the fourth tribute concert in recent years, but it continues in the tradition of the first Concert of Remembrance held in 1945 commemorating the twenty-three members of the 2/22nd Battalion Regimental Band who were all members of Salvation Army bands who had enlisted in 1940. Amongst them were Acting Corporal Wilfred Ernest Trigg and Private Francis Roy Meddings who were locals from Geelong.
The battalion served as a garrison force at Rabaul, New Britain, until 23rd January 1942 when Japanese troops stormed ashore in the early hours of the morning, capturing and killing many soldiers. Most of the band died at sea on 1 July 1942 when the Montevideo Maru, carrying an estimated 845 POWs and 209 civilians from Rabaul, was sunk off Luzon in the South China Sea by the United States Navy submarine USS Sturgeon.
The evening is an enjoyable pre cursor to the Anzac Day commemorations. Every year the concert is a great success and this year is expected to be no exception!
