Timber Benefits Series - Energy Efficiency
Timber has great insulating properties and, as such, Canterbury timber windows and doors can be a valuable investment for your new home or renovation. Timber has a low thermal mass which simply put, will help your house stay cool in the summer, and warm in the winter. Its insulating properties mean timber doesn’t allow heat to escape in or out of it. So utilising timber with double glazing can really make an impact on your power bills all year round. Please see below Diagram. This can save you a lot of money when you consider the life of the windows.
U Value (Uw) measures how readily a window conducts heat. It is a measure of the rate of non-solar heat loss or gain through the assembly.
This insulation also works with sound, so there are benefits with minimising outdoor sound – or your neighbours hearing the sound your house is producing!
The lower the U Value, the greater a window’s resistance to heat flow and the better its insulating value.
This shows us that a timber double glazed window can give us a 26% improvement in cooling and 31% improvement in heating. It also shows the benefits from a U Value perspective.
