Your windows and doors are amongst the most important elements of your home. As we’ve explored in previous blogs, your windows and doors are critical for regulating the temperature in your home and keeping you safe from intruders.
Knowing when it’s the right time to replace your windows and doors is part of being a responsible homeowner and a necessary investment. So how do you know that it’s time to replace the windows and doors in your home?
Here are our top 5 reasons.
1. They Look Damaged
Noticed any damage to your windows and doors? Hopefully, you’re the only one. As well as looking unsightly, damaged windows and doors are essentially an invitation for intruders and thieves to put your windows and doors to the test.
By contrast, sturdy solid-looking doors and windows will deter thieves and give your home a secure and locked down appearance. Your undamaged doors and windows will also attract the right people when it comes time to sell your home - attracting more potential buyers and higher asking prices.
2. Your Home Is Draughty
Gaps and air leaks in your home can completely undermine the insulative ability of your home - accounting for as much as 25% of all heat lost. If you feel a draught with all of your windows and doors closed this means that your home is substantially less energy efficient than it could be.
If you suspect your windows are letting in a draft but aren’t sure, use the incense test. Hold a small lit piece of incense near the perimeter of your windows, and if the smoke starts to wobble or move erratically you have a draught.
3. Your Window and Doors are Hard to Open or Close
If you’re struggling to open or close your windows and doors, it’s a good indication that your windows and doors are too old, rusted, rotting, or warped. If you have to expend more than a small amount of exertion to open or close your windows and doors, it’s time for new ones.
4. You Can Hear More Noise Than You Should
Are you noticing more traffic and neighbourhood noise coming into your house than you’re used to? This could mean one of two things:
- The seals around your windows and doors have degraded to the point where they are no longer useful.
- There’s been a build-up of traffic and noise around your home and your windows aren’t as soundproof as they should be.
In both cases, it’s time to investigate new windows and doors.
5. They Look Awful
A no-brainer. If you’ve moved into a new home and hate the windows or doors, get them changed. There’s so much variety out there when it comes to materials, colour and window or door type - you're bound to find something that you like.
