Why You Need To Care About WERS.

Where has this year gone?
It seems like two days ago that we were all sat around enjoying Christmas lunch – and somehow, it’s already May. Of course, for those of us in the south, May signals the start of the cold, miserable winter weather.

For anyone who’s experienced life in a poorly heated, insulted or energy-rated house – this time of the year can get downright depressing. Waking up in the morning and racing to the thermostat, only to have to wait 30 minutes for the first puffs of warm air to make the inside of your home barely habitable.

Windows Make Your Home Cold (or Hot)

The culprit when it comes to making your home freezing cold in winter is no mystery – it’s your windows. Something we’ve covered in many of our previous blogs is how much heat you lose through your windows in winter, and as our friends in the far north will attest, how much heat you gain through your windows in summer.

Your home can lose as much as 40% of its heating or cooling energy through windows alone.

To make life in a country with such an extreme climate as Australia easy as possible, you need to have energy-efficient windows. Not just to make your home comfortable in the extremes of summer and winter, but also to reduce your energy costs and to help create a cleaner and healthier environment.

What is WERS?

The Window Energy Rating Scheme (WERS) makes the process of selecting energy-efficient windows for the climate that you live in as easy as possible. Independently managed by AGWA, WERS is a fair, rigorous and credible system for testing any window manufacturer’s performance claims.

WERS helps you select an appropriate window based on your climate zone
, so if you’re in the freezing cold south at the moment you could have windows that won’t have you sprinting for the thermostat every morning – or if you’re in the far north, will help keep your home cool year-round.

How Do I Ensure My Windows are WERS Compliant?

The Southern Star Group is a proud member of the Windows Energy Rating Scheme, and all Southern Star Aluminium and Canterbury Timber products are rated with WERS compliance, so you know that if you have a Southern Star Group window you will have selected the most informed and appropriate option for your home.

If you would like to talk about the WERS rating in Southern Star Group products, our sales team is always willing to help. They’ll be able to talk you through the best WERS option for your home, location and climate.
