Timber Species Options
The Southern Star Group offers an extensive range of timber products through our Canterbury Timber Windows and Doors, and Homeview Timber Windows and Doors brands. Canterbury and Homeview offer a variety of timber options to choose from, with three different species available for all timber products. Each has its own unique set of features and benefits to suit certain projects both practically and aesthetically.
Western Red Cedar
Meranti is a hardwood timber. It is durable and resistant to denting; providing a practical and attractive option. The medium to coarse texture with an interlocking grain provides an even surface with colour variations including white, pale pink to dark red, and pale brown to deep brown. Meranti is a solid wood that is not subject to warping or twisting. This means it will hold its shape in versatile environments and over time. It has good nailing, screwing and gluing properties and readily accepts varnish, paint or stain.
Western Red Cedar is a beautiful softwood timber. It is well known for its long lasting qualities, and when properly finished and maintained, will deliver decades of trouble-free service. Cedar's uniqueness derives from its low density; this gives it an insulation value superior to most other species. Western Red Cedar is a preferred wood for nearly all purposes where attractive appearance and resistance to weather is important. It has a fine and stable grain structure that will not warp or twist. The fine grain characteristics of Cedar minimise shrinkage and swelling, extending the life of surface finishes. The colour variation of the grain is a distinguishing feature and makes it highly sought after as a material for feature joinery. Ranging in colour from honey/beige to deep reds and browns; the mix of colours contained within a single piece of cedar makes it as stunning as it is unique. Cedar is a resilient material that has built-in natural preservatives, providing resistance to borers, termites, rot and fungus growth. Its lack of pitch and gum veins allows cedar to readily accept semi-clear and clear finishes, which accentuate its natural colour variations.
Kiln Dried Hardwood, or KD Hardwood is grown in Australia and harvested in Victoria under Government regulations. It is a strong and durable timber, which is not subject to warping or twisting. KD Hardwood is a sustainable timber with a straight grain and consistent colour typically pale pink to straw. Varnish will create a beautiful contemporary finish, though it can also be painted, stained or polished.
